Integrative veterinary care for your pet combines conventional veterinary approaches to health care with options outside of mainstream veterinary care. We still provide quick solutions to day to day problems that arise, including emergency and hospital based care such as prescribing medications, blood testing and analysis, xrays and ultrasound. But we will also take a different approach by getting to understand your pet’s individual health patterns that accumulate over time. We focus on improving wellbeing and not just treating the diagnosis or disease. We also look for ways to improve your pet’s vitality, to enhance their health for their whole life so they are healthy into old age too. Our veterinarians have continued to study and have further qualifications in other forms of treatment such as acupuncture, Western and Traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
There is an ever expanding evidence base within the scientific literature and we always discuss consent with our clients first.

We will probably need to de-brief what has happened and what the next considerations could be. This may involve more testing to understand your pet’s health or to trial different therapies, conventional or natural depending on your pet’s quality of life and your medical philosophy and your time and financial resources.

Integrative Medicine is not for everyone, it often involves more time than Conventional medicine, both in visits and at-home care, however, over the long term this is likely to be of benefit, and most families are happy, however, sometimes conventional medicine is preferred by some families.
We always take the time to explain why we recommend the way we do in our consultations and care plans.
We are comfortable taking a more conventional approach or referring to other professionals if you need, we respect people’s wishes and are open minded to discuss what is and isn’t working without judgement
Some families are more comfortable than others with some of the modalities we offer and we will always conduct an informed consent process before deciding to incorporate more experimental treatments.

This is a fair question, because we are different from most Veterinary Businesses in Australia.
Please note that our business is centered around providing direct advice via consultations. This advice is tailored to your pet’s individual needs. Our Vets have years of additional training on top of their Veterinary Degrees and are constantly doing more course/certificates.
Our consultations are longer than the industry average because ethically we need to explain the informed consent process of all available treatment options (conventional and unconventional) as well as gather the information needed to design the next steps of your pet’s individual health care plan. Prior to an initial consultation our vets will read through all the previous medical records of your pet, after the first visit (a one hour consultation) the vet will write a written Integrative Care Plan (This is 3 hours worth of time).
Our approach where possible relies on clinical examination and gentle strategies, with the aim to avoid invasive testing as much as absolutely necessary. As we advocate a low chemical approach and do not sell shelf-stable dry dog foods (we do stock some convenience freeze-dried, broths and canned options) and focus on preventive medicine (i.e. pet guardian education and empowerment, dental brushing, wholefood feeding, preventing obesity, preventing injuries/arthritis), we do not generate as much income as other Veterinary Practices from vaccinations, surgeries, x-rays, diagnostics, chemical sales and prescription pet foods. Please note, however, that we maintain a fully functional hospital so can perform surgeries and diagnostics here if needed (We invest heavily in having this equipment maintained ready to use if needed)
We would love to not have to charge, but we do need to ensure we can continue operating our hospital at the standard our clients are accustomed to, we need to be able to invest in our team’s training and equipment upgrades as technology rapidly evolves.
As a small independent business this means that in order to keep our doors open, we do need to charge for our vet’s professional time (this includes writing prescriptions, refilling prescriptions, referral letters, phone consultations).
Please do note we do not “care just about the money”, we only care about money enough to keep our doors open to care for your pets in the best way we can (after years of highly specialised training and experience). We care about animals. We wish we could be a charity and treat all animals, but unfortunately, until we get Medicare for Pets this isn’t a reality.
If you are struggling with the price of vet visits, please speak to us, we will nonjudgmentally discuss options, including reverting to a conventional protocol (Integrative Veterinary Medicine blends the best of Conventional and Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine), guiding you with whether pet insurance may help, or other financial support. If your insurance provider is not providing good refunds please mention this so we can look into it for you.
On a positive note, we have been auditing our medical records and have found that our average spend at the vets for our families is $600 per year below the average spend according to 2021 pet-spending data.

We pride ourselves on delivering thorough quality upstream preventative care, we have below-average rates of preventable diseases such as diabetes, haemorrhagic gastroenteritis and urinary stones in the population of pets that seek our wellness care and regularly exceed prognoses given to pets with serious diseases.
For pets with complex medical problems, unfortunately, individualised expert Integrative Care can get expensive, again talk to us if you are struggling financially (or overwhelmed by the complexity of the care) and we can review this. Holistic care is not for everyone, and we are happy to refer to other vets for additional clinical opinions if you need this.

Integrative Medicine is complex. It is individualised to patient's exact needs.
Our vets develop care plans that involve many factors, more than you may be used to with conventional veterinary medicine.
While our team is trained to help navigate your pet's medical record for clarifications of their intended care plan, we do not like to make quick decisions when changing their care. We take the health of your family member very seriously and as such we try not to make rushed decisions that may have big impacts.
This is why we often will recommend repeat consultation to get the full story and come up with safe, effective and meaningful solutions.
How this may differ from previous experiences with veterinary clinics is that when using population level protocols versus individualised protocols, then there can easily be quick answers to quick questions.
The vast majority of families visiting our practice so positive changes to their pets health, so we ask that you trust our process here, and in exchange, we will give 100% as champions of your pets health.

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body in order to stimulate the body to heal itself. These needles are typically left in place for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the desired effect.
As the needles we use at All Natural Vet Care are hair-thin and smooth, there is not usually a pain response seen during an acupuncture treatment. Some animals will react or give a slight jump as the needle passes through the skin, especially in particularly sensitive areas, but they are then generally comfortable when the needle is in place and many animals even fall asleep during treatment.
Acupuncture is most well-known as a treatment for musculoskeletal and nerve pain, but it is also traditionally used for internal medical problems. In the present day, acupuncture is rarely used as the sole treatment for internal problems such as indigestion or respiratory disorder, but is used in conjunction with other modes of treatment. Acupuncture is very effective in reducing the side effects of other conventional medications (including chemotherapy drugs), relieving pain, reducing anxiety, and generally returning the body to a balanced state of health.
For acute conditions that have been present for a short amount of time, only a couple of acupuncture treatments are likely to be needed. If your pet has a chronic condition, they are likely to need a few treatments in order to restore their body’s balance. These treatments are likely to be more frequent initially, once or twice weekly for example, and then become less frequent as your pet’s condition improves. Some pets will need ongoing maintenance acupuncture treatments; these may be monthly or even half-yearly depending on the condition.

For most pet owners, a diagnosis of cancer for their pet can leave them overwhelmed and already grieving. The older our pets get, the more likely such a diagnosis is, with some sources stating as many as one in two cats and dogs over 10 years of age will get cancer.

Dr David Ward carries out most of the surgical procedures at All Natural Vet Care. He has developed strong surgical experience in a busy emergency hospital and performs a vast range of surgeries from routine desexing and dental procedures to more complex soft tissue surgeries. Dr David works alongside Dr Matthew and Dr Tina Hunyh, as well as our US certified Vet Technician, Amy Miller, to ensure our protocols remain ultra-safe and cutting edge.
We pride ourselves on providing the best quality care for each and every patient while they are in our hospital. One of our surgical nursing team monitors and cares for after each patient before, during and in the recovery period after surgery.
We can now also request Specialist Surgeon Dr Eugene Buffa and his team come in to our hospital to perform specialist surgery while we take a holistic approach to monitoring the anaesthetic (which can include acupuncture) if needed.
We are a B class registered Veterinary hospital and are equipped with modern surgical equipment, including monitoring devices such as pulse-oximeters and sphygmomanometers (blood pressure monitors). Every patient’s vital signs are monitored constantly while under general anaesthetic and during the recovery period; this enables us to intervene early if any parameter starts to change.
Your pet's safety is our number one priority when undergoing any surgical procedure and we do strongly recommend a pre-anaesthestic blood screen is performed of the morning of your pet's procedure to assess organ function. All patients are also given pain relief and placed on intravenous fluids routinely to assist in recovery and to minimise the risk of side effects from the anaesthetic.

We undertake a full pre-anaesthetic physical examination the day of intended anaesthetic/surgery.

We always place intravenous catheter to ensure we can always give life-saving medications in the extremely rare case of a cardiac arrest.
We maintain a large clinical team so we can mobilise a qualified response team to ensure we can deliver emergency care effectively – your pet is allocated a nurse for their day stay & they will be personally cared for before, during & after the surgical procedure until there are ready to go home.
We use our state of the art patient warming devices and monitoring equipment including blood pressure monitoring, temperature detection, respiratory alert, pulse oximetry to ensure any changes outside of expected can be reversed quickly.
We maintain supplies of specialist drugs, including naloxone to reverse components of the anaesthetic, dobutamine in the case of a low blood pressure event and injectable vetmedin in the rare event of heart failure. Our surgeon, Dr Matthew, has six years of emergency and critical care medicine.
We perform intravenous fluid therapy as standard and operate fluid therapy protocols designed by Board Certified Critical Care Veterinary Diplomats.
We have trained our staff to recognise and implement effective CPR measures in the case of an adverse anaesthetic effect
We recover you pet in a safe, calm environment with ongoing direct supervision until they are fully recovered. We adhere to a limit of only 3 procedures per day to ensure we can achieve this. If your pet is particularly nervous at the vet we may even schedule a day where we can dedicate the entire team to your pet.
Most importantly, we take general anaesthetic very seriously. We understand how stressful it is to leave your animals with us to undergo anaesthesia. We have over 70 years of experience and only recommend anaesthetics when we think they are the best option.

We are not board-certified nutritionists but have additional training in nutrition and expertise in natural feeding, which often, specialist nutritionists do not support, especially raw feeding, for which we recognise as being a major option to consider for many pets, we can also build chinese food therapy and herbal medicine into our diet programs.
Dietary factors play an enormous role in the health of our animals.
Simply improving the plane of nutrition can have remarkable effects on well-being and overall health. When specific disease conditions are present, modifying the diet can actually assist in the restoration of health. Specific foods or supplements can be introduced, or quantities increased or decreased to affect targeted organs, cells or systems of the body.
We take an integrative approach to veterinary care and always take a thorough nutritional history and assess current dietary and nutritional needs by conducting an holistic consultation.
Sometimes changes to the diet can seem very time consuming or inconvenient, but within a short space of time, you will know if it has been worth the effort. Once your pet's health has been restored in many cases we can then simplify the diet and make feeding time much simpler for the long term.
When assessing your pets diet we examine key areas such as your pets age, weight, health, energy, as well as their skin health, bowel health and dental health. Then we can work with you, to find the best food plan for your pet, taking into consideration your own time and lifestyle.
We can advise you on homemade diets for your dog or cat, and help with supplements. For dogs on homemade diets we recommend nutritional supplements to balance up home made diets. Products we recommend include Wellbeing for Dogs Wellbeing Essentials, We also often use omega 3 oils, as well as organic dried liver, heart and green tripe treats.
At different life stages, you pet will need a different diet. We can advise on the best feeding for young growing pets, including large breed dogs, as well as healthy adults, and pets in their more senior years. Overweight pets may struggle to lose weight on some of the "diet" dry food available, so we can help work out a weight loss plan to suit your pet's needs.
We can help with nutritional advice for pets with kidney disease, liver disease, bladder conditions such as bladder stones or feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), heart problems, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, skin problems, digestive problems, arthritis, dental disease and cognitive disorders. If your pet has allergies, we can help with Elimination Diet Trials, or discuss new-generation tests such as Microbiome mapping and Nutriscan food allergy testing which may be useful.
If your pet has been diagnosed with a complex illness like cancer, then their nutritional needs may vary depending on how they are affected, and the treatment they have. We can work out the best diet for support with cancer, during chemotherapy, radiation treatment, surgery, or recovery.

If your pet is unconscious, struggling to breathe or bleeding heavily please drive safely and immediately to your nearest 24hr Emergency Hospital, having a passenger call for advice.
Otherwise please call us. Our Veterinary Nurses are trained to perform a telephone assessment (tele-triage) to determine if we recommend that you seek immediate services with an Emergency and Critical Care Vet Specialist Team (i.e Tick envenomation, Brown Snake Bite, Bloat, Marked Gastroenteritis) and we can tell you who we would recommend in your area. We can send the medical records onwards and give them a heads-up.
If our team members are unsure about what to do, they can speak to the vet on duty (note: not necessarily the usual vet you see)
While we understand how stressful it can be having an unwell pet, please do not demand to speak to the vet directly, please allow us to follow our protocols. The vast majority of our team (vets, technicians and nurses) have acquired years of emergency medicine prior to joining All Natural Vet Care, and as advocates for your pets health, we need complete cooperation.
If we determine that we are capable of handling your pet’s acute care (i.e. Pain assessment, Nausea, Small Wound, Sore eye) we will make time available for you to bring them in*, but please note, that our Integrative Vets are not rostered on every day, or may be at capacity with the animals that are under their direct care on a particular day, we may recommend you see another vet within our practice. If this needs to take place, then the vet you see will have access to your pet’s individual plan and your usual vet will be updated.
*If our practice is at capacity, in the best interests of your pet, we will have to recommend that you seek emergency veterinary services either at a practice local to you or an emergency hospital. We apologise in advance if this needs to happen to you.
For emergency consultations we may need to have you wait a little longer than you are used to.
In order to keep our professional services as affordable as possible (as a small independent business who focuses on consulting rather than performing surgeries) we cannot afford to leave emergency slots (each emergency takes at least an hour) open each day unfortunately. For your peace of mind, do know that when you have your pets with us in the clinic, we prioritize your family member’s direct care over other animals. It is all a careful juggling act and one that we take very seriously.
Prevention is better than cure so please try to stick to re-visits and wellness checks as recommended.

The herbs we prescribe for your pet may be in the form of tablets, powdered granules, or liquid tinctures. Occasionally we may even prescribe fresh or dried herbs. Administration of these herbs can sometimes be a challenge with some pets, but don’t panic, our research over the last 2 years has shown that over 85% of pets will end up accepting the herbs without issues or digestive upsets, so there is hope (and other options if it doesn’t work out)
Here are some tips;
Dogs and cats can be given powdered herbs and liquid herb extracts mixed in with their food.
If your pet’s appetite is poor you may need to disguise the taste further by using especially strong-smelling foods, like tuna or a sardines.
For some pets, baby food or canned cat food is such a novelty that they will take the herbs mixed into these foods. (Avoid baby food containing onion)
Other tasty treats to hide the herbs include cream cheese, peanut or other nut butters, ground meat or liver, and fruit including applesauce and mashed banana.
Flavoured gravies for pets can also be used to dilute the herbs and mask the taste.
If your pet’s appetite is reduced because they are unwell, do not mix medicines in regular meals if it stops them eating – administer the herbs separately in a different food treat.
Powdered herbs may be mixed into small “pills” of butter, then frozen to increase firmness. You can blend them with anchovy paste, organic peanut butter, jam, sandwich pastes, or other thick tasty foods.
It may be easier in some cases to administer the herbs by mixing them into a liquid that is to be gently and slowly administered by syringe. Examples include meat or poultry broth, clam juice, flavoured syrups, gravy and fruit juice.
You can take advantage of your cat’s fastidiousness by mixing the herb in a hairball gel or nutripet or anchovy paste, and smearing it on his or her paws—only very sick cats will let that insult go unchallenged!
Liquid herbal extracts, if alcohol tinctures, may be better tolerated if the alcohol is boiled off first. Add the prescribed dose into an eggcup, with one tablespoon just boiled water, allow to cool and mix in food
Liquid herbal extracts are often not accepted in any form by some animals. In this case, you can use a dropper to put the extract into a capsule, close it, and administer it to the animal in that form quickly.
Always dilute liquid extracts (preferably with something sweet-tasting) if giving directly into the mouth. Some herbs like echinacea are best not given this way.
If herb capsules must be administered, they often “go down” more easily if one end is covered in butter. Be sure to administer water or broth afterward to ensure that the capsule passes quickly to the stomach

Over the years we have tried to be able to offer shorter consultations however we have found that it simply cannot be done to the standard we adhere to.
While you may think an issue is straightforward, as holistic practitioners, our vets will want to know more before making decisions and want to communicate the risks and benefits clearly.

In order to perform a thorough holistic 2nd opinion we do need to review all previous medical records prior to a first visit, but if you prefer, you can request it yourself from your own vets and then send to us.

Vaccination programs have played an important role in preventing diseases and are an essential part of animal care. However, it is now being recognised that veterinarians should aim to reduce the vaccine load on individual animals to minimise the risk of adverse reactions to the products.
We are not anti-vaccination, we are strategic vaccinators, we conduct thorough risk:benefit analysis on all therapies recommended.
Recent research suggests that the duration of immunity delivered by vaccines is variable and may be significantly longer than 12 months and that immunity may even last a lifetime.
Core vaccines that all animals should have to protect them against severe, life-threatening diseases are:
Dogs – canine distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus
Cats – feline enteritis and cat flu (feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus). Vaccination for cat flu does not prevent them getting or shedding flu virus but does prevent them getting the worst form of the disease.
Non-core or non-essential vaccines can be given to those animals whose geographic location, local environment or lifestyle places them at higher risk:
Dogs – kennel cough (parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchisepctica) and Leptospirosis (which in 2020 is an emerging issue in Sydney)
Cats – feline leukaemia virus, Chlamydophila felis and Bordetella bronchiseptica, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
We recommend you come in to see us so we can evaluate your pet’s vaccination needs. We will look at any prior vaccinations and when the next should be given. We can individualise the protocol for their risk factors and also regarding the type of vaccine we use. We will prescribe a vaccine plan specific to your pet’s risk of preventable diseases at the same time reducing the possible side effects of vaccination.
We can discuss herbal medicine and probiotics which may support how the body handles necessary vaccinations especially for puppies and kittens.
If we think your pet has already had sufficient vaccination to be protected against these diseases, we may recommend an antibody titre test to confirm this. Antibody titre testing is a process in which a small amount of blood is taken from your pet and sent to an external laboratory where the level of antibodies present is determined. Antibodies are what the immune system uses to fight infection, so this allows us to determine whether your pet is protected. If your pet’s antibody titre result is high enough, there is no need to continually re-vaccinate.

We are holistic, we consider all aspects of your pets body, as well as their mind, soul and environment, for that matter.
The condition of an animal’s teeth and gums affects more than just the state of their breath. It also has an effect on their overall health.
Animals with gingivitis (red gums), tartar and calculus on their teeth are harbouring high numbers of bacteria in their mouths, which can lead locally to infection of the jaw bones, as well as systemic disease of the kidneys and heart.
Maintaining good oral health and oral hygiene is very important for both Cats and Dogs, just as we need regular dental checks and cleans from our dentist so do the furry members of your family.
After each oral exam we conduct, in collaboration with what you can sustainably achieve, we develop individual action plan to improve your pet’s overall oral health, which will also include information and instruction on home care options for your pet and any recommendations on immediate dental treatments required.
Our vets use up-to-date dental equipment to scale the tartar and calculus off the teeth, and then polish all teeth. We treat all stages of dental disease under a general anaesthetic and require your pet to stay with us in hospital for the day.
It can be difficult to determine whether teeth require extraction prior to removal of thick calculus and probing around the tooth roots, which can only be done properly and without causing anxiety under general anaesthetic.
If our vets find that your pet has a tooth that requires extraction, we will call and advise you while your pet is under general anaesthetic. Any pet that has dental extractions will go home with pain relief, and will come back for a free recheck three to four days after the extractions.

Except in cases where the product was shipped in our error or was considered to be faulty on arrival, the purchaser is required to pay all costs incurred with regard to shipping the product back.
