Beransa: The New Canine Arthritis Injection
What is Beransa?
Beransa is the Australian name for Librela (bedinvetmab). This is a veterinary medicine used to help dogs with osteoarthritis by relieving their pain.
How does it work exactly?
Bedinvetmab is a type of antibody that is designed to target a specific protein called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). By blocking the signals sent by NGF, Bedinvetmab can help alleviate the pain associated with osteoarthritis. Essentially, it works by interfering with a protein involved in pain signalling, providing relief for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.
How is it given to dogs?
It is administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once a month, with the dosage depending on the dog's weight. This injection may be only administered by a veterinarian.
Does it really work?
Studies have shown that Beransa (Librela) is effective in reducing pain. In one study involving dogs with osteoarthritis, a significant improvement in pain score was observed in dogs treated with Beransa (Librela) compared to those given a placebo. Another study conducted in the USA also demonstrated a higher success rate in regard to pain management in treating dogs with Beransa (Librela) compared to the placebo group.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects of Beransa (Librela) are mild injection site reactions, such as swelling and heat. Precautions should be taken by healthcare professionals and animal owners or keepers to avoid accidental self-injection and potential hypersensitivity reactions.
Are there any contraindications?
This product must not be used in dogs intended for breeding, in pregnant or lactating dogs as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) plays a key role in foetal nervous system development or in young growing dogs.
